Why I like LANparties - since 2001

What is a LANparty exactly?

Back in the days when internet was still dail-up internet, the first multiplayer games which could be played from computers seperatly became available. These days with DSL and Fiber internet we are just able to game with each other over a long distance, but that wasn't possible back in the days.

Therefore you packed up your computer, monitor and peripherals and came together on a location to set up a Local Area Network (LAN). And played games for days/nights onward.

The first games I played on a LANparty were Unreal Tournament 1, GTA2, Quake. Later games like Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty came out and I knew I had a new hobby.

Changes over the years on what a LANparty is

In 2026, there are no gamers who do not have internet access in the Western World. PC-gamers, Playstation, X-BoX, Switch and other consoles all have internet access.
The need for LANparties with the purpose to play games together has perished with the availability of broadband internet
. But with access to (unlimited) broadband internet, isolation of gamers could happen. Since you speak to your friends online, you don't see them very often. Which is okay, but seeing a friend face to face is a blessing.
